Stream Trace Walk (2023)

Stream Trace Walk was commissioned by the Nasher Sculpture Center in collaboration with Mary Miss as part of her installation Stream Trace: Dallas Branch Crossing for the exhibition Groundswell: Women of Land Art curated by Leigh Arnold.

The project took the form of a participatory walking tour tracing the historical path of the Dallas Branch, a small stream that once flowed through downtown Dallas before being encased in concrete and redirected into the city’s stormwater system. The walk followed the stream’s approximate route from the Nasher to its outfall at the Trinity River in Dallas’s Dallas Design District.

Along the route, the tour narrated an ecological history of the city, moving from the landscapes of the Texas Blackland Prairie to the engineered infrastructures that now shape Dallas’s waterways. Participants were guided through overlooked urban sites where buried hydrological systems intersect with the contemporary city. The project included a small takeaway publication produced for participants in the walk. Stream Trace Walk was developed by Trey Burns in collaboration with Tamara Johnson.
